Shea Olein, also known as Liquid Shea Butter, is the fractionation of Shea Butter. This process separates the Olein (the liquid) and the Stearin (the solid) of Shea Butter. The end result is oil that is liquid at ambient room temperature but can slightly solidify in colder temperatures. Shea Olein is milky white to off white color with a silky texture. Shea Olein melts at a lower temperature than Shea Butter and is high in unsaponifiables - the fraction of vegetable oil which contains sterols, tocopherols, vitamins, and moisturizing agents. In soap making, the unsaponifiables retain their original composition during the process unlike the saponifiables (the components in the oil than can be converted into soap). Shea Olein can be used at the same ratio as any other oil utilized in formulations. Use it in sunscreen products to take advantage of the UV absorbing properties. Moisturize while protecting the skin!
